City of Riverside to Hold Public Meetings to Discuss City’s Redistricting Process

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The City of Riverside will hold a public hearing on Aug. 3 before the City Council’s Inclusiveness, Community Engagement, and Governmental Processes Committee (ICGC) to review the redistricting process and provide direction for implementing the Reshape Riverside Redistricting Plan requested by the City Council on Jan. 11. Public input is invited at this meeting.

Every 10 years, after the federal government publishes updated census information, California must redraw the boundaries of its Senate, Assembly, and State Board of Equalization districts, so that the districts correctly reflect the state’s population.

The City of Riverside Charter requires review of City Council ward boundaries to ensure each councilmember represents about the same number of constituents in each ward. The review is intended to maintain continuity of existing wards, draw wards that are compact and contiguous, and respect neighborhood boundaries to the greatest extent possible.

Following the Aug. 3 ICGC meeting, the City will host a series of workshops, virtually and in-person in every ward, to give residents an opportunity to participate and provide input regarding the redistricting process.  All meetings and workshops are open to the public and community input is strongly encouraged. The actual introduction and adoption of the ordinance amending Ward boundaries must be completed by August 2023.
