Gabriel Castillo’s life began like many others, filled with dreams and possibilities. At the age of 18, everything began to change. After a series of unfortunate events, including a difficult family breakup and the loss of his job, he found himself homeless, living in a parked vehicle in the Eastside neighborhood of Riverside. Without a steady income or a place to call home, Gabriel felt trapped in a cycle of despair. Unsure of where to turn next he began to drink heavily as a coping mechanism for his reality.
Despite the harsh reality of his situation, Gabriel never gave up. Every day, he would go to the Youth Opportunity Center located at Bobby Bonds Recreational Center hoping to find anything that would help his situation. The Youth Opportunity Center provided Gabriel with free clothing from the Sotelo Armoire, assisted him with job searching, transportation to interview appointments, and daily meals through a grant funded program for the community’s youth.
Assistant Recreational Coordinator, Tereasa France reached out to the Riverside Access Center in need of resources for Gabriel where she explained Gabriel barriers which included, homelessness, regaining custody of his daughter, obtaining his ID, and having a justice involved background. Lead Outreach Worker, Jazmin Garcia began the process of completing a housing assessment, providing resources, an ID Voucher and a plan. Tereasa and Jazmin worked together on providing services and holding Gabriel accountable to achieve his goals.
Unfortunately, during the process of Gabriel getting his life back on track he was faced with incarceration and would be away for 90 days. Tereasa and Jazmin did not give up on Gabriel. Once he was released Tereasa and Jazmin reconnected and encouraged him to take life seriously and not to give up on himself.
Weeks later Gabriel received the good news that he was pulled for a brand-new unit at the Aspire Apartments. This motivated Gabriel even more to find employment and to keep moving forward.
Gabriel was officially housed in his unit on January 24, 2025, and finally has a space he can call his own, leaving behind the life of uncertainty and instability. Gabriel is now learning how to budget and manage his money and has been actively going to court to regain custody of his daughter.
Gabriel’s story is a testament to resilience and the power of second chances. It’s a reminder that no matter how difficult life may seem, there is always the possibility of a new beginning. Gabriel may have started with nothing, but he now stands tall, knowing that through hard work and perseverance, he can overcome anything
